Walter L. Schindler
Managing Partner

Walter and Managing Partner Hank Habicht are responsible for co-managing all aspects of SAIL’s operations and investments. Walter focuses his energies on building powerful external networks with SAIL's global investors and advisors and providing strategic advice to the firm's portfolio companies on corporate finance, capital markets, and value realization strategies. He has deep experience in renewable energy after leading cutting-edge alternative energy and cogeneration projects at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher where he recognized early the valuation creation potential of cleantech investment opportunities. Widely recognized for his ability to work enthusiastically and build trust with successful entrepreneurs and management teams, he continuously looks for creative opportunities to put SAIL's global networks at the service of the firm's portfolio companies. Walter is a member of the Board of Directors of Xtreme Power and FlexEnergy and also a member of the North American Advisory Board of The Cleantech Group.

Prior to SAIL, Walter was the Managing Partner of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Orange County, CA office. His 20-year career at this leading international law firm included spearheading some of the firm's most successful IPO and M&A transactions, as well as acting as a strategic advisor to many of Southern California's leading corporations, including, Pacific Mutual Life Insurance, PIMCO, Ultrasystems, Inc. and SafeGuard Health Enterprises. In the early 80's he worked on the first IPO of an alternative energy company in the US and later worked on many of the firm's biomass-fired independent power projects. In addition to working with his Gibson Dunn partners around the country, Walter worked closely with the firm's European offices.

Walter has been a local board member of a number of important national and regional organizations, including US Bank, American Cancer Society, the Executive Leadership Council of the Chapman University School of Business and Economics, and the Southern California Entrepreneurship Academy. As a passionate writer and poet, he has published a book of original poetry and an interpretation of the life and poetry of John Milton. He is also a devotee of European culture and art, traveling to Europe often for business and pleasure. He holds a Bachelor and a Doctorate degree from Yale University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy.
